ICJ Day 3 LIVE: Top UN court hearing on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories
- Updated

The United Nations’ highest court holds a series of historic hearings into the legality of Israel’s 57-year occupation of lands sought for a Palestinian state. Six days of hearings are scheduled at the International Court of Justice, focusing on Israel’s open-ended occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem.

The United States says that the United Nations' top court should not issue an advisory opinion that says Israel should "immediately and unconditionally withdraw" from territories sought for a Palestinian state. Acting State Department legal adviser Richard Visek on Wednesday urged the International Court of Justice not to seek to resolve the decadeslong Israeli-Palestinian conflict "through an advisory opinion addressed to questions focusing on the acts of only one party." Visek was speaking on the third day of hearings at the court into a request by the U.N. General Assembly for a nonbinding advisory opinion on the legality of Israel's policies in the occupied territories.
