San Bruno park workers closed off a section of City Park Sunday after a large tree branch fell approximately 40 feet and struck a woman while she covered her 2-year-old daughter.
The woman, Carolina Orlando, was taken to Stanford Medical Center after the early afternoon incident and said she is in pain, but doing fine. She is thankful no one else was hurt. If it was a child that was struck, the situation could have been tragic, she said.
"I'm glad it was me and not someone else's child," Orlando said Monday. "I'm glad I took the brunt of it."
City Manager Connie Jackson said the trees in the area were determined to be healthy. The fallen branch was likely the result of windy weather, she said. After the incident, the trees were checked on a preliminary basis and will be again evaluated by a certified arborist, Jackson said.
Even if it was an act of nature, Orlando is obviously shaken.

At approximately 2 p.m., Orlando was watching her two children at the park's playground. She heard a snap and tried to grab her daughter Gabriella. Before she could, she was lying on the ground with the large branch and debris all around her. Standing two feet away from the debris was her 6-year-old son Tony.
Within moments, 911 was called and Orlando's husband Stanley ran over. Stanley, a firefighter and emergency medical technician, told her she needed to go to the hospital.
"He was freaking out. He said if it was six inches higher, it would have broken my neck," she said. "Everyone around us was stunned."
