The victim in yesterday's early-morning explosion in Belmont has been identifed as 40-year-old Paul Alexander Keller of San Jose, and investigators have determined that a pipe bomb was the cause of the blast.
Hours after the blast yesterday, police were not able to say whether or not Mr. Keller was a victim or suspect in the explosion, but they now believe him to be a victim.
"[Keller] is being considered a victim, and we have no suspects at the moment," said Belmont Police Sgt. Patrick Halleran.
Halleran was not able to confirm a rumor that the bomb was planted in Keller's vehicle by the ex-boyfriend of a woman Keller is presently dating.
"We have no specific information. We're trying to determine who is related to who, and who is involved. Investigators don't have a clear picture yet," Halleran said.

Keller is not a resident of the housing complex on Mulberry Court where the explosion occured, but it's believed that as he attempted to enter his vehicle at 7:20 a.m., the blast occured from inside the vehicle, causing severe damage to his hand and arm.
He was subsequently transported to Stanford Hospital where he remains in intensive care.
Police worked late into the night, searching the complex's pool and woods for evidence. His car was taken away by county sheriffs, and is still being examined for evidence.
