The Temple Sholom in Burlingame is offering a $5,000 reward for a 600-year-old Torah stolen from a display case.
Last seen on May 21, the scroll is made of dark animal skin attached to large wooden dowels and contains the five books of Moses written in Hebrew. It weighs about 40 pounds and stretches 175 feet when unfurled.
A silver, 10-inch pointer was also taken from the case, police said. Police have been checking Craigslist and eBay for the Torah, and the temple is offering the reward for its safe return with no questions asked, police said.
It is the most prized Torah in the temple's collection.
Hopefully the reward will put the spotlight on it and generate some more leads, said Scott Williams, a Burlingame Police Department inspector.
Any information about the Torah can be directed to Williams at 777-4149.
