San Mateo residents unhappy with the sight of garbage cans on streets and sidewalks may be relieved to hear of a proposed city ordinance aimed at limiting the hours trash bins can be left on public right-of-ways.

Up for review at the City Council’s Monday meeting, the proposed changes in the city’s code will establish specific hours when garbage cans will be allowed on downtown and residential streets. The proposed rules restricting downtown business owners from putting garbage cans out earlier than 6 p.m. the day before scheduled trash collection and requiring them to remove them from the streets by 11 a.m. the day of garbage pick-ups come in response to concerns from merchants and downtown visitors who noticed trash containers were left on sidewalks for long periods of time, said Jennifer Chen, the city’s economic development manager.

Elephant in the room...lack of foresight by cities and low ball bids by garbage collection companies created this logistical problem... from the inception of single operator trucks this was and is a problem in both residential and commercial areas.

And this proposed ordinance won't solve the underlying street parking issue...3 garbage cans 2 foot wide with supposedly 2 foot between them is 10 feet and that takes up a parking space....a single operator on each truck, lower operating costs...good for the bottom line of the garbage companies, right?

But with each set of residential garbage cans now taking ten feet of parking space, one day a week, you have the "new" problem of dealing with lost parking spaces.
