Summer may be nearing its end but a weekly outdoor live music experience at the Port of Redwood City will keep you enjoying the outdoors and dancing all the way through the fall this year.
Every Saturday afternoon, the port’s Rock the Dock music series brings live bands and festivities to the Peninsula, offering the community a chance to enjoy top-notch musicians against the backdrop of the San Francisco Bay.
Residents are invited to bring a lawn chair, blanket and jacket before heading down to the port. Concert-goers can bring their own picnic food and refreshments, or check out the food vendors available each Saturday.
New food vendors this year are Pico’s BBQ, offering tender brisket or glazed ribs, and Blue Fish Kitchen, known for its famous fish sandwich or the classic fish and chips.
Now a popular staple for many in the community, the music series was born out of a mere desire for things to do outside amid the pandemic. As restrictions were easing, the port was trying to provide space and opportunities for some fun in a safe environment, Kristine Zortman, executive director of the Port of Redwood City, said.
“It started as a desire to be outside, and has built into something that everyone is looking forward to now,” Zortman said.
The Rock the Dock music series is just one of the unique ways to invite local residents to become familiar with the port and all it has to offer, Zortman said.
“When I started here seven years ago, I would go speak at events and so often people wouldn’t even know they had a port in their backyards,” Zortman said.
Zortman said her favorite part of the music series is the opportunity to share with residents the value of a port. Concerts amass up to 2,000 people on occasion, Zortman said.
“They love the music too,” Zortman said.
Set for Aug. 2, the group SONA will sing iconic rock songs from beloved artists. The group Top Shelf Classics will take the stage Aug. 9 to perform some Motown R&B dance music. On Aug. 16, Adam Aldama & the Aces will perform for fans of funk, old school classics, and dance music. Motown will return on Aug. 23, performed by Masterpiece the Band. Closing out the month will be Native Elements, performing a special reggae classics show Aug. 30.
Concerts are slated to continue until Nov. 1.
