The Urban Libraries Council announced San Mateo County Libraries was one of the 20 most innovative libraries in the nation in recognition of its Big Lift Inspiring Summers program, which serves low-income children and reverses summer learning loss.
Big Lift Inspiring Summers is an academic and experiential learning summer camp, and the kind of experience that is usually out of reach for low-income families. The five-week program provides kindergartners through second-graders with project-based, hands-on STEM learning activities, healthy meals, exciting field trips and books to fill home libraries.Â

“Elixir of Life,” put on by Idiot String, invites the audience to Port Promise, California, a late Victorian outpost where mysteries are part of the fabric of life, and an old-fashioned tonic might do a body good. When a traveling snake-oil seller comes to town with an Elixir full of promises, each of the Port Promise townsfolk come face to face with the prospect of a miraculous second chance that could change their lives forever. See more at San Mateo’s Central Park Saturday, Nov. 5, near dusk in conjunction with the Downtown San Mateo Association. Free of charge. Audience members should expect to stand and move around during the outdoor performances and are encouraged to dress warmly. It is suitable for all ages, but best enjoyed by audience members aged 9 or older. A full list of performance times and more information can be found at idiotstring.org/elixir.
