Peace Action of San Mateo County is looking for a showdown with the San Mateo City Council March 21. Peace Action will be asking the council to pass a resolution opposing the war in Iraq and in support of bringing the troops home. No word on what the council will say, but if Peace Action is successful, then the group plans on asking other councils on the Peninsula to do the same.

Congratulations to the Notre Dame de Namur University student newspaper staff. The Argonaut took double honors at the National College Newspaper Convention in San Francisco last month. The Argonaut was awarded first place in its Best of Show competition among non-daily newspapers by the California College Media Association. The Associated Collegiate Press, which sponsored the convention, recognized the Argonaut with an honorable mention in competition with all college newspapers in the country in its division. This is the third time in four years that ACP honored the Argonaut. The lead article in the Argonaut's award-winning edition featured the story of Sister Dorothy Stang, the Notre Dame alumna who was shot and killed in Brazil last month.

A red-tailed hawk rescued by PG&E was released back into the wild Tuesday after it recuperated for 11 days at the Peninsula Humane Society's wildlife rehab center in San Mateo. The female bird was seen locking talons with another female, as is common during mating season, when it plummeted to the ground. When PG&E workers arrived to the scene of the fall, the other female had flown off to join a soaring male overhead while the injured bird remained on the ground. It was taken to PHS with a cracked beak and other injuries. While in activity, the bird gave birth to two non-viable eggs which indicated it may have been defending her established nesting territory. After the bird was released, it was joined by a male within seven minutes.

Teenage gay rights activist Marina Gatto was set to receive a commendation this week from the San Carlos City Council for her work in the community, but there was one catch. City officials forgot to contact the family and let them know it was happening. Instead, the commendation will be given out this coming Monday.

In its effort to "clean up" downtown, San Mateo wanted to remove certain newspaper boxes it deemed unslightly. One such location is B Street at Baldwin Avenue in front of Trag's Market. The newspaper boxes are now gone, all except for a box for Yank, a magazine that offers a selection of the seedier side of the neighborhood, to put it delicately. Now, the Yank box is there by itself for all to see without the unsightly clutter of other newspaper boxes. Way to clean up downtown!

You think former President George Bush was a daredevil when he jumped out of an airplane for his 80th birthday last year? Well, he's got nothing on San Carlos resident Frank Sciober. The 80 year old is jumping out of a plane March 19 to celebrate his 80th birthday March 11. He's a former paratrooper with the Air Force and will be jumping solo, unlike the former commander in chief who jumped tandem.
