A Redwood City man was sentenced to 41 years to life for killing the mother of his son and attempting to kill her daughter in July 2023, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Jose Enrique Uriarte Martinez, 45, who was convicted of attempted murder and murder by a jury in October, was denied probation and sentenced to 26 years to life for the killing of Yesenia Lopezhernandez and 15 years for the attempted murder of her teenage daughter. He will also be required to pay $12,134 in restitution.
“I think it’s a great outcome. The fact it was completed within a year and a half is a great solace to the victims and victim’s families,” Wagstaffe said. “We were able to go through the system at a good pace to get justice.”
On July 20, Uriartemartinez entered the apartment of the victim’s home with a key and brought a kitchen knife from his next door apartment.
Uriarte Martinez stabbed the victim in the neck, and shoulder multiple times. Uriarte Martinez then entered the bedroom, apologized to his son and left. The daughter called 911, police arrived, finding both victims bleeding on the floor but alive. Both were rushed to the hospital where the mother, Yesenia Lopezhernandez, died.
Uriarte Martinez and Lopezhernandez were together for five years but had broken off the relationship. Leading up to the stabbing, Lopezhernandez told Uriartemartinez that she planned to move and was taking their son with her, according to the DA’s Office.

$12,134 in restitution? Is that all a life is worth??? And 41 years in prison? Not life?
