A 37-year-old pregnant woman and unborn child were found dead in her San Mateo home Sunday, Aug. 4, with the suspected boyfriend arrested hours later driving to South California.
The cause of death has yet to be released, but the victim’s young daughter found her body on Sunday, with nearby relatives showing up to the scene soon after.
“I heard the [daughters] wailing, and it wouldn’t stop so I came out and said, ‘What’s the matter?’ and she said, ‘My mom is not breathing,’” one neighbor said, adding that the victim had lived there for more than 10 years, previously with her ex-husband, with whom they shared young children. She was about nine months pregnant and was having a daughter.
The neighbor added that relatives showed up to the house, located in the Hayward Park neighborhood on the 1300 block of South B Street, soon after being notified.
“[The daughter] asked me, ‘Will my baby sister be OK?’ It was heartbreaking,” she added.
The couple was friendly but tended to keep to themselves, the neighbor said. Relatives began contacting the live-in boyfriend, 33-year-old Andrew Coleman, to let him know about the incident, but after repeated attempts to reach out with no answer, suspicions began to rise. Law enforcement noticed he had taken his clothes and a safe from the home before leaving.
Within about five hours of arriving on the scene, police identified and arrested Coleman, who was driving to Southern California and was eventually apprehended by the West Covina Police Department.
“Everybody is just really shocked, because it’s a small neighborhood, and everyone says hello, and there are a lot of long-term residents here,” the neighbor, who has lived there for about 50 years, said. “Over 50 years, you see a wide variety of people, but there is a line between illegal activity and violence. It’s scary to think the person you say good morning to could do something like this.”
San Mateo police officers have since traveled to Southern California to interview Coleman and continue the investigation.
