A San Mateo County jail inmate could be charged with murder after she allegedly provided drugs to another inmate who then died, according to the county Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's investigators forwarded the case to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office for a possible murder charge for 34-year-old Ashley Gromnicki in the case involving the Sept. 29 death of 31-year-old Markeisha Monique Renee Blount.
Blount was found in her housing unit at the Maple Street Correctional Center in Redwood City at about 6 a.m. She was eventually pronounced dead after jail staff and paramedics provided aid, including giving her anti-overdose medication, according to sheriff's officials.
Investigators believe that Gromnicki allegedly provided Blount with fentanyl.
Over the past several days, jail staff conducted several "specialized sweeps" to root out any remaining drugs, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Investigations into Blount's death are being done by the Sheriff's Office Investigations Bureau, the District Attorney's Office and the San Mateo County Coroner's Office.
Gromnicki was in jail on suspicion of alleged narcotics offenses and theft.
