San Mateo police have announced plans to conduct a checkpoint looking for those driving under the influence on Dec. 14. The DUI checkpoint will operate from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the area of South Norfolk Street and Shoreview Avenue, according to police.
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, police said in a press release.
In addition to alcohol, driving can be impaired by marijuana, some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs, according to police.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, police said.
