After six years at the Charter Square Shopping Center, the Foster City Certified Farmers’ Market is relocating to the parking lot of Orchard Supply Hardware at 1010 Metro City Blvd.
“People are happy they haven’t lost the market,” said Jerry Lami, executive director of the West Coast Farmers Market Association, which runs the Foster City market. “Our customers have a personal relationship with all the farmers and they were worried about their food source. They rely on this on a weekly basis.”

Lami received approval for the relocation from Foster City’s interdepartmental review committee, and he expects the new market to open Feb. 17 if the Planning Commission approves it during a meeting scheduled for Feb. 15.
“Orchard Supply Hardware has been really supportive and it looks like we’ll be able to work together and do some great things out there,” Lami said.
The West Coast Farmers Market Association operates 10 Bay Area farmers’ markets, with the busiest locations in Cupertino and Foster City, where weekend shoppers total about 5,000 and 2,000 people, respectively.
The company runs a second Foster City market at the Peninsula Jewish Community Center, which is open to the public on Wednesdays and typically sees about 500 customers.
Lami expects both Foster City markets, which run year-round, to grow with the move of the Saturday one, in part, because the new location off State Route 92 is more visible and accessible, and offers more vendor spaces and parking than the Charter Square location. The Charter Square location can no longer be used because of pending development of a fourth elementary school.

The Saturday market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. currently includes 22 vendors spread across 100 tents, and Lami said he expects four additional vendors to set up shop at the new location.
Expect all the food items previously on offer, including Asian vegetables — the market’s bestseller — from Nou-Vang and Yang Chang farms, pastries from the Midwife and the Baker, Japanese noodles from Mao’s Cafe, and fresh fish from Dragon Baby Seafood. New vendors planned for the Saturday market include King’s Organic, which offers 51 varieties of fresh fruit, and a vendor selling barbecue corn and baked potatoes.
The farmers’ market will be open one final Saturday (Feb. 10) at the Charter Square Shopping Center, before moving to its new location Feb. 17.
Lami, who was previously a produce manager for Lucky Supermarkets, said more and more people are shopping at farmers’ markets and buying organic these days.
“It’s the only way to buy directly from the farmer,” he said.
