Matt Fabry was named the city of San Mateo’s next Public Works director and he will take the helm Feb. 25 after the current interim director Brad Underwood re-retires Feb. 23.
Underwood took over this summer when then-director Azalea Mitch left the position.
Fabry, a San Mateo resident with 26 years of policy, management and technical experience, including more than two years as deputy Public Works director for the city of San Mateo, was uniquely qualified and the best fit out of the finalists interviewed, said City Manager Alex Khojikian.
“Matt’s years of experience right here in San Mateo, and his ability to authentically connect with the community and work through issues collaboratively, made him the best choice for this role,” Khojikian said in a press release, adding his caring and responsiveness have built bridges within the community.”
In his new role, Fabry will lead a team of nearly 160 Public Works professionals and manage a FY 2023-24 $51 million operations budget and $78 million capital improvement budget.
Fabry will oversee the $1 Billion Clean Water Program Project, which includes constructing a new Wastewater Treatment Plant that is scheduled to be online in late 2024; street rehabilitation, the Bermuda Drive bridge replacement; improvements to the downtown pedestrian mall and Marina Library; updating the stormwater master plan and dredging the Marina Lagoon; transportation planning, maintenance and facility and fleet oversight.
Fabry lives in the Sunnybrae neighborhood with his wife and two daughters. He has lived in San Mateo for 18 years. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, and playing guitar.
