Gunshots rang out in the middle of the day near Highway 101 in San Mateo yesterday, sending one man to hospital and police on the search for gang members they suspect are the shooters.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., police responded to a call of gunfire on Grant Street between Third and Fourth avenues. The men shot a 23-year-old San Mateo resident in the forearm then fled the scene to nearby Highway 101. A neighbor followed the getaway car, but lost it as it headed south on the highway.
The neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous to protect his safety, witnessed two men in their 20s or 30s with shaved heads and tattoos running from the scene.
The witness was working in his yard when he heard three gunshots from what he described as a small caliber gun.
"I stepped out of the house and looked them in the face. They were skinhead types," the witness said. "All gang related."

The men jumped into a black, late model Ford Expedition and flew through a stop sign at Fourth Avenue and Grant Street at 45 mph. They made a left and quickly got on the freeway, the witness said.
The victim made his way to 7-Eleven at Third Avenue and Delaware Street where he called his girlfriend to take him to the hospital. The man remained at the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his left forearm. Police were able to interview him while being treated at the hospital yesterday afternoon, said Capt. Kevin Raffaelli.
Based on the interview, police are working on the assumption that it's gang related, said Lt. Barbara Hammerman.
This is the latest in a string of unrelated crimes that began earlier this year. Within the last week, three burglaries occurred at the pedestrian walkway over Highway 101. Earlier this year, a near fatal shooting happened on Claremont Street in front of Taco Bell - just blocks away from yesterday's shooting. North of downtown, there was a shooting on Grant Street and a gang-related stabbing on Amphlett Boulevard.
