Hot weather, light winds and clear skies are coming together to prompt air quality monitors to declare Monday a "spare the air" day in the nine Bay Area counties.
According to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, as air quality levels dip into the unhealthy range, Bay Area residents can help by cutting back on air-polluting activities that might otherwise fill the Labor Day holiday.
Barbecues ought to be avoided, along with yard work involving gasoline-powered tools like lawn mowers and leaf blowers, air district officials said in a statement.
They also said anyone planning vigorous outdoor exercise should limit it to the morning hours on Monday.
The district recommends carpooling, consolidating errands into fewer driving trips and waiting until after 6 p.m. Monday or until Tuesday to refuel.
Children, seniors and people with respiratory and heart conditions suffer when air quality is poor, according to air district officials.
