State officials confirmed this week that San Mateo County will receive $21.1 million in federal money for the construction of a new 180-bed juvenile hall and a 30-bed girls camp.
The grant, announced by Gov. Gray Davis and awarded by the state Board of Corrections, will allow the outmoded and unsafe 54-year-old Hillcrest Juvenile Detention Center to be replaced with a multipurpose juvenile services campus.
County officials have said the project could cost nearly $100 million altogether. They are seeking other state and federal funding, and considering a bond measure. The San Mateo County grant was one of eight such awards totaling more than $60 million made to counties statewide for new detention facilities.
Lake County received $809,200 to add 24 beds to its jail; Mendocino County received $1.5 million for a two-story, 56-bed medium security jail, and San Joaquin County received $8 million for a 132-bed maximum-security jail.<
