The man who plunged to his death from the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge yesterday was seen 40 minutes earlier trying to jump off the San Francisco Bay Bridge.
The man was fished out of the Bay by Coast Guard officials at 4:47 p.m. and was flown to Stanford Medical Center. However, Stanford spokeswoman M.A. Malone said the man was dead on arrival. His identity will not be revealed until his family can be notified.
The California Highway Patrol said it received numerous cell phone calls at 3:38 p.m. yesterday from motorists on the Bay Bridge who said the man was trying to jump off the westbound span.
As an Oakland K-9 officer spotted the man, he got back into his Dodge Intrepid and drove off, according to Joanna Holsman, of the Oakland Police Department.
Holsman said the Oakland officer followed the man down Highway 101 at speeds up to 85 mph. The man went east on State Route 92 to the high-rise portion of the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. He then got out of the car and jumped as the Oakland officer tried to approach him, Holsman said. The highest point of the bridge is 135 feet from the water.
A CHP spokesman said Redwood City police also responded to the scene.
The U.S. Coast Guard was set to respond to the Bay Bridge when it got a call at 4:21 p.m. confirming the man had jumped from the southern bridge. The Coast Guard sent a helicopter crew and a 21-foot rescue boat to the scene, said Coast Guard spokeswoman Veronica Bandrowski.
No one knew whether the man was attempting to jump from the Bay Bridge before the Oakland police officer arrived, or as a result of that officer pulling him over.<
