A red flag fire warning for the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas set to continue through Monday will also extend through Tuesday morning for the North and East Bay hills, according to the National Weather Service.
Weather service officials issued the warning around 5:15 a.m. Sunday due to gusty offshore winds and low relative humidities.
Strong north to northeast winds of 10 to 25 mph with gusts of up to 40 mph developed in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas this Sunday, according to the weather service.
Northeast winds were strongest last night near the North and East Bay hills, where sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 40 mph hit. Winds in the coastal areas will not be as strong, weather officials report.
Offshore winds are expected to die down on Monday, although relative humidity values will likely remain extremely low, causing the red flag warning to remain in place throughout the day for most of the Bay Area.
A layer of moist marine air is expected to blow along the central coast on Monday night.
Officials said the layer will only be about 1,000 feet deep, but it will help to raise humidity levels in most places.
Offshore winds are expected to delay the recovery of humidity levels in the North and East Bay hills. Therefore the red flag warning was extended for those areas into Tuesday morning.
