About 130 people rallied outside the Tesla showroom in Colma to protest its CEO Elon Musk and President Trump. The rally was organized by Coastside Indivisible out of Pacifica and Half Moon Bay.
It started with one Peninsula resident — a Tesla owner who said she wanted to show up.
Now, more than a month later, hundreds are gathering every Saturday from 2-3 p.m. at the Colma Tesla dealership, protesting billionaire and Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s unprecedented role in the federal government and its budget-slashing initiatives.
“It was a sense that our democracy is under attack and our federal workers are under attack and Elon Musk is so much a big part of the attack,” Pacifica resident Cynthia Kaufman said. “Just wanting to draw attention to him as a particularly bad individual.”
Created by President Trump Jan. 20, the Department of Government Efficiency is a task force created to slash federal spending and root out inefficiencies. Led by Musk, it seeks to slash federal spending. So far, it has focused on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and worked to consolidate agencies and programs it sees as redundant, with layoffs of government workers. It has claimed to have saved more than $1 billion, but has not listed details.
Anger against Musk and Tesla seems to be having an impact — stock in the company has gone down since its postelection high, Bay Area Tesla drivers are plastering their cars with anti-Elon stickers and Teslas and dealerships have faced vandalism in some instances, though organizer Lorrie Epling emphasized their protests are wholly nonviolent.

Epling hopes the Tesla protests will show Musk the dissatisfaction Americans have with his slash-and-burn approach to governmental policies in a place he’ll notice — his wallet.
“It was a way to make him pay attention,” she said. “The symbolism of Tesla, the connection to Musk, but also it could actually have a financial impact on him as well.”
Attending the protests gives people an hour of the week where they feel their power, Epling said, and gets them out of the headspace that there’s nothing to be done.
“‘Nothing we do counts, there’s nothing worth doing’ — that’s how people feel,” she said. “[But] that’s how people at the top are doing this to us. That’s how they want us to feel.’”
Taking action against Musk and, by proxy, the current Trump administration, is especially important to Kaufman as a Jewish person, she said. Kaufman cited the detention and attempted revocation of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil’s green card as a particularly concerning example of government overreach.
“This means a lot to me this sense of, what would I have done if I was in Germany in 1933 early days,” she said. “The idea that there’s no consequences when people do illegal actions, that is the technical definition of fascism.”
Both Kaufman and Epling encouraged those who feel frustrated to attend the Colma Tesla protests, which have been gaining traction ever since they began.
“The time is now,” Kaufman said. “We have to do everything we can everywhere we can to stand up against what’s happening.”
A few observations… These folks are letting their emotions get in the way of common sense. Don’t these deep blue Bay Area folks realize they’re demonizing the electric cars they thought would save the world? I guess they don’t really care about global warming. Don’t these folks realize that attempting to hurt Musk in his wallet hurts themselves and fellow Democrats just as much, if not more? Isn’t Musk worth about $300+ billion whereas many of us are lucky to call ourselves millionaires? It’s going to take a lot to hurt Musk and you’ll end up hurting everyone who invests in Tesla stock (just about all stock mutual funds) much more. I’d recommend that anyone attending/bystanding for the spectacle, take plenty of pictures and video in the event the protest becomes violent. Law abiding citizens should do their part and forward information to law enforcement agencies.
Agree with your sentiment. Many of these folks must agree with wasting taxpayers' money (DOGE = bad), and that anyone associated with the Orange Man is bad. BTW - those astronauts would still be hanging in orbit if Musk didn't step in.
Your reply was the funniest. Maybe some of these folks aren't "deep blue" but somewhere in the purple range because they're not fond of either party. IF I attended, it wouldn't be for thinking it would hurt Musk (doubt if that is possible) but because it is a visible and symbolic location for a law-abiding protest demonstrating dissatisfaction with the illegal way he is trying to achieve his aim. The way people, even vital medical staff at local VA hospitals, are being affected by the ill-conceived, inefficient DOGE actions. You are correct about taking pictures and videos but not for reasons you state. Yes, attendees should have their cameras out to provide proof of a non-violent protest and capture photographic proof of any deep red, law-breaking culprits. Then we'd be in agreement of law-abiding citizens doing their part to forward said information to law enforcement agencies.
Thanks for a funniest response in kind, bjune-smj. Perhaps there are folks are in the purple range (based on your response, you don’t sound like one) but they’re likely blue purple folks. Regardless of whether they thought it would hurt Musk or not, they’re still hurting pensioners and institutional investors who hold Tesla stock. You say Musk “is trying to achieve his aim” but Musk and his band of merry men are messengers attempting to achieve one of the many goals of our (yes, our) great President Trump in Making America Great Again. Why are folks attacking messengers? And what do you have against rooting out and eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse?
Perhaps IF you attend, please take as much pictures and videos as you can. Protests are expected to be non-violent so footage is not as newsworthy. But if a protest becomes violent or criminal acts take place (such as vandalism) from anyone of any political stripe, please be sure to forward your footage to law enforcement agencies. Perhaps IF you attend, you can also do a bit of investigative work and find out who is paying some of these protesters. Be safe and law-abiding out there IF you attend. BTW, did you catch the clip of the woman in the NYC subway chasing after a Trump supporter and falling down while trying to steal the man’s hat? That’s news-worthy. I’m going to go out on a limb and say she’s not in the purple range.
Wow. It's worse than I thought. Careful, your colors are showing and they're not red, white and blue. The "waste, fraud, abuse" mantra that is hypnotically repeated is not worthy of intelligent discourse or rebuttal. BTW, You are always sound well-written, educated, grammatically correct, intelligent, but there's no use in un-hynotizing you. I read an interview with four conservative columnists that gave me a fuller picture of the country's sentiments. THAT was useful and educational and not one "mantra" was repeated. BTW #2: My color doesn't matter; agree with some policies on both sides, but don't agree with "red's" brand of fealty.
Thanks for your response, bjune-smj. You’re following the Dem playbook of making excuses when unable to respond to simple questions, whether on waste, fraud, and abuse, or any other issue. Let’s try again… If my colors aren’t red, white, and blue, what color are they? This inquiring mind wants to know because I’d say I’m a proponent of common sense America First policies from the “orange man.” Why don’t Dems have the same priorities – we’re all in this together, aren’t we? Why are Dems now against Musk and Tesla when less than a year ago, Dems were singing Musk’s and Tesla’s praises? I guess global warming was never a thing with Dems since they’ve tossed their principles aside so quickly in their zeal to “hurt” Musk. Maybe because Musk aligned himself with Trump’s America First values? Why do Dems hate Trump more than they love America?
Your color doesn’t matter but the tenor of your comments reveals your allegiance. You shouldn’t always agree with worshipping the “blue’s,” if at all. Instead, you should honestly question why Dems are against common sense American policies. For instance, why are Dems pushing for biological men to compete against biological women? Against deporting criminal invaders? We hear no proposed solutions but plenty of four letter (wash your mouth out with soap) words. If you stopped to honestly answer, you logically have no choice but to move towards the red side. I welcome you. Directionless Democrat America Last hijinks will move you the rest of the way to the right side. I look forward to reading of your enlightenment.
Are you sure that "even vital medical staff at local VA hospitals" are affected? Not everyone who is employed by the VA is a member of the medical staff. There are many others who have no connection with medical care whatsoever. Unless, of course, watering plants and bringing donuts for meetings is considered essential.
Thanks for your response, Pacman, but according to me (and likely most others) it is also “called weather.” I’m speaking to the left’s hypocrisy about supposedly caring about global warming when in reality, they don’t. Any thoughts on the about face from the left and why they don’t care about global warming as much as they say they did?
Also, if people truly cared about global warming, why do they give a pass to China, India, other developing (and developed) nations to burn carbon to their hearts’ desires and why do they give get-out-of-jail free cards to folks who take 400+ private jets and who knows how many public jets to attend of all things, a climate conference to lecture everyone else about carbon emissions? If there truly was such a thing as man-made global warming, nobody seems to care. Everyone continues to go about their business and weather the “weather.” Or for the left, “global warming.”
Isn't it fun watching the people that used to hate Musk, EVs, and renewable energy now defending him? And then of course on the other side we have Musk Realization Syndrome (MSR) by the people who called him the real life Tony Stark and now finding out he was never that "green and sustainable" in the first place.
The third group regarded him a conman when he started using his Paypal Mafia money for all kinds of shenanigans and bullying himself to the top of various enterprises like Tesla. This group also noticed for a while now that his companies might be doomed - not for political reasons, but for bad technology (Hyperloop, FSD, autopilot, mediocre battery technology, Model X, cybertruck, Semi EV, exploding rockets).
Some folks will never learn from history; "what would I have done if I was in Germany in 1933 early days". The current situation is not at all analogues to 1933 Germany. If one compares the radical Palestinian, who came here under a pretext to study, by extension with the persecution of the Jews, one wonders what education has done with or for you. It is striking that Jewish folks, very safely and comfortable here, some of whose forbearers were massacred, now take it up for for the Fifth Column types who perpetrate crimes against their kin in Israel. One wonders!

Global warming? According to your President, [it’s] “Called weather.” (March 2022 on “Varney & Company”)
