On Monday, Nov. 2 Portola Elementary School students in San Bruno continued a long tradition of taking a hike.
Since 1985, Portola students have hiked to the Portola Discovery Site on Sweeney Ridge on the anniversary of Gaspar de Portola’s discovery of San Francisco Bay on November 4, 1769. The site is located about three miles from the school and is the reason why Portola is the school’s namesake. That link was celebrated when the school opened in 1965, but became more obscure as time passed.
In l985, the school began an annual discovery hike to educate students on the historical event that took place in their own neighborhood. This year, the school observed the 25th anniversary of that first hike in 1985.

On Monday, Oct. 26, Catholic Telemedia Network (CTN) presented Notre Dame Elementary School in Belmont with a plaque recognizing them as the number one user of streaming video in the Bay Area (covering the Archdiocese of San Francisco, the Archdiocese of San Jose and the Oakland diocese). Notre Dame Elementary is also in the top 10 percent of users nationwide. The school’s curriculum is tethered to technology. Technology is woven through all subject areas and used in all grades, one through eighth. Congratulations to our teachers and students.
