MPWD thanked all those at Central Elementary School who participated — the third grade teachers, their students, the parents who chaperoned and of course, our wonderful staff for all their hard work and effort. The calendar remains open for the current school year. Any affiliates of a Belmont-Redwood Shores public or private school grades three through five are free to contact MPWD at 591-8941 to learn more about this free opportunity.

Preschool teachers throughout San Mateo County attended workshops this fall to help them work more effectively with children with challenging behaviors. Children from low-income families in preschools and family child-care centers receive Raising a Reader book bags with high-quality children’s books to take home each week. And parents throughout the county will have access to Virtual PreK, a parent-engagement strategy in English and Spanish that provides tools to parents of preschoolers via the Internet, print materials and DVDs designed to help them reinforce at home what their preschoolers learn at school.
These are a few of the programs that First 5 San Mateo County is funding with a three-year, $5.598 million grant as part of the San Mateo Early Childhood Quality Improvement Project, designed to support and develop high-quality early learning experiences for children up to 5 years old throughout San Mateo County.
The San Mateo County Office of Education is serving as the lead agency for EQuIP. This new initiative builds on the successes of Preschool for All. First 5 funding for Preschool for All, a five-year project designed to support high-quality preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds in San Mateo County, with demonstration projects in Redwood City and East Palo Alto, ended in June 2009.
