A Redwood City man is in custody after allegedly carjacking another man early Thursday morning on the 1000 block of Beech Street in Redwood City, according to police.
At approximately 2:49 a.m., a 29-year-old man was sitting in his vehicle in the parking garage of his apartment complex when confronted by a man with a knife who demanded his vehicle. The victim gave him the keys and the man, identified by police as Bryan Rios Serrato, 19, asked for his wallet. The victim pushed Serrato and ran while the man got into the car and fled, according to police.
At approximately 5 a.m., a San Mateo County sheriff’s deputy spotted a vehicle in the area of Woodside Road and El Camino Real and tried to stop it. It sped away and crashed on the 400 block of Roosevelt Avenue after a brief pursuit. Serrato was caught in a backyard on the 500 block of Lincoln Avenue after a foot pursuit, according to police.
There was a brief struggle but Serrato was taken into custody, according to police.
Serrato was booked into the San Mateo County Jail for carjacking, robbery, felony evading with a vehicle and assault on a law enforcement officer. The victim was not injured, according to police.
Anyone with information about this incident or the suspect is encouraged to contact Redwood City police Detective Dave Stahler at 780-7620 or San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Detective Lisandro Lopez at 363-4055.
