How to minimize traffic near Burlingame schools to increase safety will be studied by the district in the coming weeks.
Seventy-two people have signed an online petition asking for staggered start and end times noting traffic problems near Franklin Elementary and Burlingame Intermediate schools. Superintendent Maggie MacIsaac said the process isn’t that simple but that the Burlingame Elementary School District will be studying options in the coming weeks.
Lisa Kreft, a Franklin and BIS parent, said the traffic has always been bad. It’s manageable at Franklin, where there are more volunteers, but can be hectic at BIS, she said. In May, she noticed a lack of traffic one Tuesday afternoon. On Tuesdays, the schools have staggered release times. The 12-minute difference resulted in far less traffic, which inspired Kreft’s suggestion to shift the class schedule at BIS 10 to 15 minutes.
MacIsaac understood the concerns but noted it’s not as simple as changing times. A number of students take a SamTrans bus to and from school, she said. That schedule would need to be considered. The instructional minutes and lunch programs may need to be adjusted as well. And, there could be ways to make other traffic-alleviating options to the drop-off area, she said. Those are all being discussed over the next two weeks.

The district did begin meeting with city officials to discuss options.
Kreft was happy to report that the district was on board to look at options. Her next big push will be to get a dedicated person in front of BIS to help direct traffic. Doing so, she said, will create a safer environment for those dropping off and picking up students.
