San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown Friday vetoed a supervisors' ordinance appropriating $2.5 million of airport reserves to fund a huge lawsuit against a major SFO construction contractor.
Brown said he preferred "a different funding mechanism" that would amount to a loan from the airport, with interest, for the full expected cost of the suit or around $7.5 million.
The supervisors present at their Feb. 18 meeting voted unanimously for the ordinance ordering the airport to hand over the reserve funding, after meeting some two hours behind closed doors with city attorneys, in hopes of eventually collecting as much as $30 million from Southern California's Tutor-Saliba Construction. Supervisor Gavin Newsom was absent that evening.<
