Greg McCulloh was named Belmont’s poet laureate for a three-year term beginning in 2026.
McCulloh’s application for this honorary role was filled with enthusiasm and innovative ideas for creatively engaging the community with poetry. During the applicant interview, he thoughtfully described the evolution of one of his poetry submissions. It was this honesty and ease that the Review Committee felt would inspire others to try their hand at the art of poetry, according to the city.
“His vision for the role of poet laureate is one as both an educator and celebrator of poetry and our city,” Brigitte Shearer, Parks and Recreation director, said. “Which is perfect for our birthday year.”
McCulloh is a poet from the San Francisco Bay Area. Born in Minnesota, he moved to California at an early age and was raised in Belmont. He is a graduate of San Francisco State University, where he studied English literature. He was also a frequent contributor to Golden Gate Xpress, a bilingual student publication.
As poet laureate, McCulloh will work to promote poetry throughout the community and celebrate Belmont’s centennial through the literary arts.
