Hoping to encourage people to adopt older animals and honoring Valentine’s Day, the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is hosting a Senior Sweetheart event, waiving adoption fees for some older pets in February.

There will be no adoption fees for those who choose to adopt dogs and cats over the age of seven years this month, according to a spokeswoman for the humane society.

“Adopting an older animal has many benefits, including not having to kitten- or puppy-proof a home,” said Buffy Martin Tarbox, a spokeswoman for the society.

Also, “a senior animal’s personality is already developed, so there won’t be any surprises about temperament,” Tarbox said.
