Seventeen strikers were arrested Wednesday in the third and final day of strikes on nine Northern California hospitals.
Officials at California Pacific Medical Center's California Campus in San Francisco made a citizens' arrest after several protesters moved to the front steps of the facility. The center is an affiliate of Sutter Health.
Ann Mosher, a spokeswoman for the center, said the protesters were blocking access to the facility. She called the action a publicity stunt.
Officials of the Health Care Workers Union Local 250 of the Service Employees International Union said the arrest was illegal and the protesters were not blocking access to the building.
The strike is the seventh such action in recent months aimed at Sutter Health. Workers want more say in staffing levels and decisions made at Sutter-owned hospitals, union officials said.
Mosher said the hospital proposed a solution that Local 250 accepted at other East Bay hospitals. Local 250 spokesman Dave Bates said the offer the medical center proposed was different and unacceptable.<
