SAN FRANCISCO -- One man was killed and another was critically injured in an apparent random shooting outside one of the city's landmarks early Saturday, police said.
The shooting occurred around 3:20 a.m. when Juan Bauza and his friend drove up to the parking lot of Coit Tower, a popular tourist destination for sweeping views of San Francisco.
There, they had a brief conversation with the suspects, a group of three or four men who had been drinking, according to police reports. As Bauza drove away, one of them flagged him back down and another suddenly opened fire into the car, police said.
Bauza, 27, of Oakland, was killed, and a 20-year-old man from Emeryville, whose name was not released, was being treated at San Francisco General Hospital for life-threatening injuries.
"The surviving victim said they didn't do anything to provoke the shooting -- they had just gone up there, killing time at the end of the evening," said Inspector Dennis Maffei.
After the shooting, Bauza apparently tried to drive away but crashed into a wall, Maffei said. His friend ran to get help from neighbors, one of whom called 911.
Police were looking for a sky-blue late 1980s or early 1990s four-door Honda Accord and were interviewing neighbors who may have witnessed the shooting, Maffei said.
The Medical Examiner's Office said an autopsy would be conducted Monday.<
