Love is in the air. Last week, we were bombarded with $4 Hallmark cards, ads for restaurant/hotel Valentine specials and talk show hosts giving dating tips. I heard one offering online dating do's and don'ts. If you are meeting a relative stranger from one of the well-known Internet matchmaking sites like Match.com, choose a well-lit, public place. Sound advice. I won't even try to help you with your romance (though having a big, dopey lab like Cooper doesn't seem to hurt).

But, if you're interested in having your dog meet another dog, here's my advice. Find neutral territory, like a dog park. Don't introduce them at one of the dog's home turf - their yard or home. One dog may feel territorial and protective while the other overly hesitant and shy. During the initial meeting, keep both dogs on leash. If all goes well, you may be ready for the "second base" of dog dating. You can remove leashes during their next meeting. And, remember, if you aren't already attached, we have plenty of singles at the shelter looking for love.
