The San Mateo Alumnae Panhellenic Association held its annual "Dollars for Scholars” luncheon and fundraiser March 31 at Dominic’s of Poplar Creek. Spring colors and Easter centerpieces gave the dining room a festive atmosphere and the bright sunshine brought out 120 sorority alumnae, friends and family. Traditions changed as gentlemen were invited for the first time and more than 15 attended.
Guest speaker and KGO personality John Rothman discussed "What’s Next in the Middle East.” Rothman stressed the importance of education in helping to understand each other in this shrinking world and congratulated the SMAP Association for providing college scholarships for 14 years. Since 1996 the SMAP Association has given a total of $32,000 to 76 San Mateo County women students. This year, thanks to the generous support of members and local merchants, SMAP is awarding 10 scholarships of $500 each. Nancy Dunn of Burlingame said, "I look forward to attending this luncheon fundraiser each year and am delighted to see such an excellent turnout in support of the San Mateo Alumnae Panhellenic’s scholarship awards program.”
The San Mateo Alumnae Panhellenic Association is a member of the National Panhellenic Conference. NPC, founded in 1902, is the umbrella organization for 26 international women’s fraternities and sororities. Each member group is autonomous as a social Greek letter society of college women and alumnae and serves as a resource for young women and their parents seeking information about the sorority system and recruitment. The San Mateo Alumnae Panhellenic also provides a sorority experience opportunity for alumnae whose sorority might not have an alumnae chapter in the San Mateo County area.
