The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County has a small office at 521 E. Fifth Ave. near downtown San Mateo, but it fills a big need.
Last year, Legal Aid’s 12 attorneys served 1,360 families, representing 3,737 individuals. Hundreds of volunteers, lawyers and other professionals, assist Legal Aid in carrying out its goal of "Justice For All.”
Three of these volunteers were honored at the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County’s Annual Awards Luncheon May 2 at the Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley. Margaret Martin, Esq., Law Offices of Margaret Laughlin Martin, accepted the Dorothy M. Wolfe Award for her pro bono efforts, the Guardian of Justice Award went to the law firm of Cooley Godward Kronish LLP for its commitment to the mission of Legal Aid, and Joseph Galligan, C.P.A., Galligan, Thompson & Flocas LLP, received the Natalie Lanan Achievement Award, in recognition of his volunteer efforts.
"The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County is a check and balance that ensures the big guy can’t take advantage of the little guy. Legal Aid allows the less fortunate to be given the same opportunities as someone who can afford them,” Galligan said.
