Two hundred guests and local dignitaries mingled at a cocktail reception under open skies in Palo Alto’s Mitchell Park on the summer solstice June 22.
The occasion was "An Evening with Remarkable Trees,” named after Thomas Pakenham’s series of books. Guest-of-honor Pakenham guided the audience through a screen-projected, personal tour of his photography of great trees from around the world. State Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, emceed the event, accompanied by Irish music played by the Greenbridge trio. All event proceeds benefit Canopy’s urban forestry programs in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto.
Canopy, formed 12 years ago to protect, care for and renew Palo Alto’s urban forest, has enjoyed a groundswell of public support. In 2007 Canopy worked with seven hundred volunteers on plantings, surveys and tree care, and most recently achieved major success planting a thousand trees in East Palo Alto, laying the foundation for a budding urban forestry program that will benefit that community for generations to come. Canopy was awarded Home Depot’s 2007 Neighborwoods Award in recognition.
