Sophomores Emilia Kunkel and Poppy McKenzie wear the Aragon-Hillsdale rivalry well.
Kunkel and McKenzie each recorded double-doubles as the Lady Dons (6-1 PAL Bay, 15-4 overall) raced to a 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 sweep Thursday at archrival Hillsdale (2-5, 6-12). Aragon has now won seven straight matches in head-to-head PAL Bay Division matches against the Lady Knights. Hillsdale did earn a win against Aragon last season in non-league tournament play.
Kunkel led the way Thursday, swinging at a .321 clip to record 13 kills, 12 digs and two blocks. McKenzie added 11 kills, 12 digs and two blocks. Senior Sosefina Tatola led the Dons with 13 digs.
With the win, first-place Aragon keeps pace with Menlo-Atherton atop the PAL Bay Division standings, as the Bears swept Woodside. Carlmont entered the day tied for first place as well, but fell to second after a four-set loss to Sequoia.
THURSDAY
Sequoia 3, Carlmont 1
The Ravens (5-2 PAL Bay, 13-9 overall) put themselves in the PAL Bay Division conversation with a 29-27, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18 victory to knock Carlmont (5-2, 8-8) out of first place. With the win, Sequoia moves into a second-place tie with the Lady Scots, one game back of first-place Aragon and Menlo-Atherton.
Sophomores Samantha McMurtry and Kiera Winters led the Ravens with 18 kills apiece. Freshman Yanely Rodriguez fronted the defense with four blocks, while McMurtry and Winters totaled three blocks each. Senior libero Joslin Fiel recorded a team-high 23 digs.
Basis Independent 3, Pacific Bay Christian 1
Pac Bay (2-3 PSAL, 9-8 overall) served up 10 aces, but it was not enough at Basis Independent-San Jose (3-1, 8-8) rolled to a 25-13, 25-9, 12-25, 25-12 win in Pacifica. Sophomore Charlotte Khim led Pac Bay with five aces, while sophomore Nicole Khim totaled a team-high six kills with four aces.
Summit Shasta 3, Design Tech 1
Senior outside hitter Bianca Flores scored 18 kills to lead the first-place Black Bears (5-0 PSAL, 16-5 overall) to a 25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-8 win at Design Tech (3-2, 6-7). Flores added eight digs, while junior Daniela Ruiz anchored the defense with a team-high 21 digs. Ruiz just missed a double-double, totaling nine kills. Summit Shasta totaled 23 service aces, led by Ruiz and senior Vanessa Xu with five apiece.
Menlo-Atherton (6-1 PAL Bay, 13-7 overall) swept 25-18, 25-13, 25-16 at home against Woodside (0-7, 1-11) to remain tied for first place with Aragon in the PAL Bay Division.
The Lady Rams (3-4 PAL Ocean, 5-14) earned their third PAL Ocean win in their last four league matches, taking it to five sets for a 25-20, 18-25, 25-15, 17-25, 15-6 home win over Jefferson (2-4, 3-10).
Sacred Heart Prep (6-0 WBAL Foothill, 16-6 overall) rolled to a 25-18, 25-8, 25-23 home win over Mercy-Burlingame (3-3, 8-8).
Notre Dame-Belmont (5-1 WBAL Foothill, 16-8 overall) swept 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 home win over Crystal (0-5, 4-5).
