Peninsula basketball fans: tired of driving all over the Bay Area to see good basketball games? Well, I’ve got good news for you. You can see eight quality teams tip it off this week at the 48th annual Burlingame Lions Club tournament, hosted by Burlingame High School.
The tournament starts Tuesday, then takes a day off Wednesday before getting back on the court Thursday and the tournament wrapping up Friday night.
And to be honest, this tournament has the makings of being a good one. Take first-round games, for example. Tuesday’s opener pits Half Moon Bay vs Sacred Heart Prep at 3:30 p.m., two of the best Division IV teams in CCS. Both teams made it to the Division IV semifinals last season.
That is followed by Valley Christian vs Priory at 5 p.m. Valley was an Open Division participant last season after winning the Division II title in 2024. Priory, meanwhile, has won three of the last four CCS Division V titles, including last season.
Game 3 features Leigh against Palo Alto at 6:30 p.m. This is a rematch of one of last year’s Division I semifinal games that saw Palo Alto beat Leigh 40-35. Palo Alto then lost to Carlmont in the Division I championship game last season.
The first night concludes with an all-PAL matchup as Hillsdale takes on host Burlingame at 8 p.m. The Panthers advanced to the Division III semifinals last season, while the Knights, which struggled in 2024-25, have started the DeShawn Mitchell coaching era.

The Sacred Heart Prep boys’ and girls’ water polo teams, who won Central Coast Section titles last month, were both well represented on the all-CCS teams, as voted on by CCS coaches.
The Gators swept both MVP awards, with seniors Oliver Marcin and Clay Carrington sharing the boys’ MVP honor. Meanwhile, Ellison Brush, a senior goalkeeper for the Lady Gators, was named girls’ CCS MVP.
In all, SHP had five others boys named to the first, second, third or honor mention teams. Gates Gamble, a junior, and goalie Murdoch Baker-Matsuoka were named to the CCS first team, Eddie Erief, another junior, was named to the second team, while Ryan Karr and Charlie Baker, both seniors, were honorable mention.

Menlo School’s Hunter Coleman, a sophomore, and senior Alex Stoffel were named to the CCS first team, along with Serra senior Colin Wright. Two other Menlo seniors, Calvin Barad and goalkeeper Connor Burks, were both second-team selections. Menlo’s Adam Afar, a sophomore, Sequoia junior AJ McDonald and Serra freshman, Tyler Kreuger, were third-team selections. Lincoln Bott, another Menlo sophomore, earned honorable mention.
On the girls’ side, Casey Coleman, a senior, and Kiernan Hogan, a junior, were named to the first team. The second team features juniors Lauren Rossi and Caroline Selna, along with freshman Naia O’Hanlon. Maddie Colabianchi, another SHP freshman, was named to the third team.
Menlo’s Sabina Sutaria, a junior was a first-team selection, while Knights’ goalie Sophia Maldonado, a senior, was named to the second team. On the public school side, M-A senior, Sabine Polly, Woodside junior Megan Hohl and Aragon junior Emily Troy were honorable mention selections.

OK basketball, soccer and wrestling coaches. It’s your turn to hear my three-time-per-year spiel about getting results to the Daily Journal.
There are two ways to go about it: coaches or team scorekeepers can email the results to sports@smdailyjournal.com. Or even easier, just upload your box score to MaxPreps.com, which is where the Daily Journal sports staff goes to find results.
But if you’re one of those coaches who tries to hide stats from other teams, feel free to email.
The reason for the results in two-fold: one, to give teams credit in our daily roundups. But second, and more importantly, it gives us at the Daily Journal a chance to keep tabs on players who are having good seasons, which can translate to Athlete of the Week honors during the season, or Athlete of the Year recognition at the end of the season.
This is especially important for Peninsula Athletic League schools during the non-league portion of the schedule. Once the PAL season starts, coaches will be required to report scores and highlights to the PAL scorekeeper, who then emails the results to the Daily Journal.
Private school coaches: you’ll have to send your results individually, since I’m not aware of any of the private school leagues that compile results.
