Conventional wisdom said top-seeded Menlo would get past Aragon in the quarterfinals of the CCS team tennis tournament.
And the Knights did — barely. Menlo won two of four singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to post a closer-than-expected 4-3 win over the Dons.
Menlo (23-3) won in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, with Elise Chen winning 6-2, 6-1, and Celena Gao posting a 6-1, 6-3 decision. The Knights won their two doubles matches in straight sets, as well, with Sophia Jia and Leighten Bardery winning 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and the No. 3 tandem of Ana Yang and Bella Lieu winning 6-4, 6-2.
But Aragon (21-5), making its first-ever CCS quarterfinal appearance, stayed in the match by splitting the four singles matches. Shanay Biouk needed a second-set tiebreaker to win her No. 3 singles match in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(9). Hayley Chong beat Elsa Sonsoni in a third-set, super tiebreaker at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 10-4.
The match of the day came at No. 1 doubles, where Aragon’s Jessa Williams and Allison Newman won 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.
Menlo moves on to the semifinals where the Knights will face fourth-seeded Los Altos (14-11) at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lynbrook High School. Los Altos beat No. 5 Harker, 5-2.
Seventh-seeded Sacred Heart Prep and unseeded Carlmont will play their quarterfinal matches Friday. The Gators will face No. 2 Los Gatos (16-1) at 2 p.m. at Los Gatos Swim & Racquet Club. The Scots will be at No. 3 Monta Vista (18-8) at 2 p.m., as well.
