Anthony Waller, Troy Franklin and Destin Hawkins, Menlo-Atherton football. The Bears needed just three scores to get past Palo Alto 17-7 in the CCS Open Division I semifinals, and each of the three was something to talk about. Waller, a senior place kicker, boomed a career-high 47-yard field goal to get M-A on the board in the first quarter. Then Franklin scored on a 26-yard reception in the end zone, out-leaping a defender in tight 1-on-1 coverage to make an athletic jump-ball grab. And Hawkins capped the scoring by taking all seven carries on a seven-play, 75-yard scoring drive, finishing with a 1-yard scoring run.

Noa Ngalu and Daniel Heimuli, Menlo-Atherton football. The dynamic Bears defense stole the show in Saturday’s 17-7 win over Palo Alto in the CCS Open Division I semifinals. Featuring a 3-2-6 formation for most of the afternoon, M-A’s defensive front five allowed for the secondary to dominate with double-teams in consistent dime coverage. Ngalu and Heimuli, as they have been all season, were at the forefront. Ngalu, a senior nose tackle, totaled seven tackles, including two sacks. Heimuli, a senior middle linebacker, led M-A with nine total tackles.
