CCS boys’ basketball
Capuchino 58, Del Mar 56
The No. 10-seed Cap Mustangs (8-17) won a third-quarter shootout by a 21-18 differential, which proved the difference in their Central Coast Section Division III playoff opener against Del Mar (10-15). The Mustangs got a team-high 14 points from junior Zarian Martin, junior Brandon Mailangi added 12 and junior Conner Coplin hit three 3-points and totaled 11 points.
Wilcox 79, Woodside 64
No. 11 Woodside (11-14 overall) took a 5-point lead into halftime but got outscored 26-10 in the third quarter to get upset at home by unseeded Wilcox (9-15) in the CCS Division II boys’ basketball opener. Three Wilcox players scored in double figures, paced by 20 points from sophomore Brendon Yi. Senior Franchon Butler added 18 and junior Devin Baddo 14 for the Chargers.
Baseball
Menlo 12, Mills 2
Three were wild for the Menlo Knights as they opened the 2018 season with a non-league home win over Mills. The Knights rallied for four three-run innings, including in each of the first three frames. Sophomore third baseman Sam Weseloh got the carousel moving with a three-run home run in the first. Weseloh went on to total six RBIs.
Sophomore starting pitcher Kevin Alarcon earned the win. Through four shutout innings, the right-hander allowed three hits and one walk while striking out three. Mills senior Nick McGraw took the loss in the third varsity start of his career.

Sacred Heart Prep 3, Menlo-Atherton 2
Sacred Heart Prep starting pitcher Parker Isaacson threw four scoreless innings, before getting touched for an unearned run in the fifth, as the Gators overcame six errors to win their opener at home over Menlo-Atherton.
Gators closer Dominic Cacchione averted disaster in the seventh. Entering to start the inning with a 3-1 lead, Cacchione loaded the bases when Jake Albro singled, Anthony Waller walked and Jake Wang reached on an infield single. After a two-out RBI single by Tyler Nelson, though, Cacchione nailed down his second career save, and the first of the 2018 season.
San Mateo 12, Balboa 5
The Bearcats came out swinging, banging out 14 hits to score in all but one inning of their season opener at Balboa-SF. Jack Warren hit a three-run homer in the first inning for San Mateo in support of his own pitching win. Tommy Ozawa paced the Bearcats with a 4-for-4 day at the plate, and Murphy Dailey added three hits.
Pioneer 2, Carlmont 0
The Scots ran into a buzz saw in Pioneer senior right-hander Mason Mooney, who fired a three-hit shutout to hand Carlmont just its second opening-day loss over the past 10 years. Senior starting pitcher Henry Reich took the hard-luck loss for the Scots, working five innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
College softball
CSM 6, Diablo Valley 2
The Lady Bulldogs (14-2 overall) have played 16 games in 19 days, and kept rolling with their ninth straight win by swinging through Diablo Valley College with a 14-hit outpouring. Emily McAdams (Sequoia) improved her record to 3-0 in the circle, firing six innings of one-hit ball while allowing two runs. The freshman walked two and struck out seven. Sophomore outfielder Allie Stines (Capuchino) and freshman third baseman Aubrie Businger (Mills) paced CSM with three hits apiece. Stines is currently tied for eighth in the state with a team-best 24 hits on the year.
