NEW DELHI (AP) — Lokesh Rahul was out stumped prior to lunch Friday as India reached 94-1 on the opening morning of the second test against West Indies.
Rahul was beaten by a sharp turner from left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, and was out stumped for 38.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was unbeaten on 40 runs off 78 balls, including seven fours, and Sai Sudharsan remained 16 not out at the interval.
India fielded an unchanged lineup from the first test, which it won by an innings and 140 runs to start the two-match series. West Indies has not beaten India in their last 26 tests – home or away – stretching back to 2002.
The home team chose to bat after skipper Shubman Gill has won the toss for the first time in seven tests.
With morning moisture on the Kotla deck, India’s openers made a wary start. Rahul and Jaiswal only put on 29 in 12 overs across the first hour of play. Both batters were watchful against the moving ball and waited for scoring opportunities.
They opened up a little in the second hour with boundaries flowing more easily, as the pitch started to dry off and settle down.
Rahul struck five fours and a six in his 54-ball stay. The openers added 58 off 105 balls for the first wicket, before Rahul's dismissal in the 18th over.
The ball turned away as Rahul went down the track and completely missed the line of the delivery, giving wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach a regulation stumping.
Jaiswal and Sudharsan batted out the next 25 minutes, putting on 36 runs for the unbeaten second wicket.
West Indies made two changes from the first test – medium pacer Anderson Phillip was called in for Johann Layne, and keeper-batter Imlach replaced Brandon King.
