Three days after the failure of the ballot measure to provide pre-school classes for all California children, I attended a graduation of 120 4- to 5-year-olds dressed up in shiny blue caps and gowns. These children had just completed a year of preschool as part of the San Mateo-Foster City School District’s renowned Early Learning Center. San Mateo’s Bayside Theatre was packed with proud parents, siblings of all ages, grandparents and teachers. Ceremony highlights included the students singing, with little hands waving, "Say Hello” and "Skidamarink” (a song my father used to sing to me) and several other tunes. There were film clips of the children playing, drawing, learning, smiling, hugging and looking happy. But the most important part was the parent awards. The Early Learning Center requires parent participation at workshops and in the classroom, a unique feature that contributes to its success. Workshops include professional tips on parenting and how to raise a healthy, happy and well-educated child. About 25 parents (including fathers) received awards for perfect attendance.
