San Carlos police are warning residents to lookout for scam artists posing as driveway sealing contractors. The scammers often prey on senior citizens, take the payment and run without performing any work. Sometimes the suspects also work their way into the homes to steal money or accompany the victims to the bank to withdraw cash. Check licenses at www.cslb.ca.gov or by calling (800) 321-CSLB.

A man named Glenn Craven contacted the Daily Journal seeking more information about San Mateo’s Homeless Outreach Team on July 13 after the paper ran a series of stories on policing in the 21st century. Craven had been living on the streets for two years although he did work, he told the Daily Journal. At night, he would sleep on a bench in Central Park or in an alley next to Amici’s Pizzeria on Third Avenue. On Wednesday, Lt. Mike Brunicardi told the Daily Journal Craven was linked with the HOT team’s Officer Robert Anderson and has now found housing. "Glenn was very pleased and is doing well,” Brunicardi said.

A good credit rating is hard to come by these days. But South San Francisco recently saw its rating increase from A+ to AA by Standard & Poors, one of the top two ratings agencies. A credit rating refers to what the city’s general fund would be rated if it was going out to the bond markets today. The Standard & Poor’s rating scale is as follows, from excellent to poor: AAA, AA, A, BBB, BB, B, CCC, CC, C, D. "Especially during this economic recession, our city must continue to provide strong fiscal responsibility,” said South San Francisco Mayor Karyl Matsumoto. "Those who live and work in our city depend upon us for essential city services. I'm very proud of our city staff for their excellent work in this regard.”
The reporters’ notebook is a weekly collection of facts culled from the notebooks of the Daily Journal staff. It appears in the Thursday edition.
