Editor,
I noticed two articles in the paper Monday, Aug. 18:
We continue to gut and under fund projects that will prevent climate change and sea-level rise.
We continue to spend massive amounts of money on projects that will drive climate change and sea-level rise.
It’s cheaper and easier to fix a problem than mitigate its effects. It’s cheaper and easier to prevent a problem than to fix it.
We spend tens of billions building roads for more cars and trucks. We spend more billions on sea walls to protect against a 5-foot sea-level rise. Never mind that we are very likely to see 50- to 200-foot sea-level rises if we don’t prevent climate change and sea-level rise. We gut and under fund projects that will move home and industry from carbon to solar. We gut and underfund projects for mass transit and cycling.
When will we “get it?” When will we forbid new gas appliances? When will we restore the solar electric rate structure? When will we stop building and expanding freeways and roads? When will we fund Caltrain, SamTrans, BART, VTA, etc. When will we build a continuous and connected system of protected bike lanes throughout the county.
It’s better — and cheaper — to prevent a problem than to fix it or to mitigate its effects.

Yes. The County is spending billions widening highways, the #1 source of GHG emissions in the area.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Carlini, but apparently, as I’ve been saying for-ever, nobody “gets it” because man-made climate change isn’t a thing. Sure, we get plenty of people who talk the talk but how many truly walk the walk? Even Newsom has been forced to change his tune (https://calmatters.org/politics/2025/08/oil-compromise-california-legislature/) to reflect reality. Fossil fuels are a way of life in the past and in our future. And there’s no way California is going to dictate the minds of China, India, undeveloped and even developed countries. It is better – and cheaper – to prevent a problem than to fix it or to mitigate its effects. But only if you truly have a problem – and man-made climate change is not a problem.
