Pot, reefer, dank, ganja, herb, grass, dope, Mary Jane, hemp. We all know this drug. It is common all over the world, starting from China as a cure making its way to India, then to the United States where we first used the plant to make ropes and other things. But what people don't understand is, why is it illegal? Why is marijuana such a bad drug?
People say marijuana is a gateway drug and people who smoke it are more likely to try other drugs. I believe marijuana is probably the first drug people try but I don't believe marijuana makes people do other drugs. It is the person's fault, not the drug.
Even if the government does not legalize marijuana for everybody, I believe that the government should legalize it for those suffering in pain or sleeping disorders. It is proven marijuana is a pain reliever, so why is it illegal? How about the drugs you buy at your local pharmacy without a prescription? People have been known to die from Tylenol because they overdose. You cannot overdose on marijuana because it is natural from the earth, not something that we make in a laboratory like over-the-counter drugs.
Is it illegal just so the government has more power over us? I believe that the major tobacco companies don't want marijuana to be legal either. If it was legal they would lose a lot of money because people would be more likely switch from tobacco to marijuana. This leads to another supporting argument of mine. We hear all the time on commercials and stuff about people dying from tobacco and just by living with someone who smokes tobacco and all the bad toxins in cigarettes. Then why are cigarettes legal?

Marijuana have only two things: the plant bud itself and at times THC. It does not contain chemicals that people use in rodents killing pellets such as tobacco. If you are going to make tobacco legal, then you need to make marijuana legal as well. People smoke cigarettes at first for the buzz. They like the feeling they get when they smoke it but it doesn't help them with anything. Even though people do take marijuana for the pleasure of it, there are people who have cannabis cards and they smoke it for medical purposes.
All I'm trying to say is that marijuana is not as bad as a lot of the drugs that we already have in our local pharmacies. Therefore marijuana should be legal, if not for everyone, then at least for those who need it for medical reasons.
