Editor,
I am writing to express my support for Phoebe Shin Venkat for the Foster City Council.
While I may “only” be 20, my age has never prevented me from being involved in the community. My background includes working at CuriOdyssey focusing on the organization’s DEI initiatives, roles in two startups developing and launching Gen Z platforms, and serving on an advisory council for ABC7 News Bay Area.
I am currently studying political science and media law and policy at Berkeley, but also served on Foster City’s Citizen Sustainability Advisory Committee as the youngest resident member. “Displeased” would not encapsulate my frustrations with current city leadership. My decision to not reapply after my term ended came down to one core issue: CSAC was never meant to accomplish anything.
This became apparent to me as our council liaison would join with camera-off through Zoom, we were only given the opportunity to approach the council once per year, and the council has continuously postponed adopting the climate action plan set forth by the committee. CSAC was created to instill an impression of commitment to sustainability, while in reality, it is just a tea-time discussion without action.
Phoebe believes in utilizing the talent already in Foster City, creating an open dialogue between all community members, and revitalizing an attractive economic landscape. Phoebe has the vision and leadership Foster City desperately needs — she truly cares about all voices, not just those who are the loudest, she made me feel seen regardless of my age.
