On Tuesday we will be electing two new members to the Peninsula Health Care District Board. This election is critical as the new board will finalize negotiations of a 50-year lease and operating agreement with Mills-Peninsula Health Services, covering construction of a new Peninsula Hospital.
Recent articles have uncovered that the group "Citizens to Save Our Hospital" has bankrolled the campaigns of two candidates to the tune of almost $50,000. Their money comes largely from members of the Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation and the Mills-Peninsula Medical Group.
While they are quick to throw around charges of "conflict of interest" against past members of the board and other current candidates, it appears that the real conflict of interest lies with this so-called "citizens group" and their current candidates Ullyot and Gemple. A special interest group that recruits and runs candidates in order to gain majority control of the board, lavishly finances their campaigns (50 times more than what any other candidate is spending), encourages their candidates to keep quiet about their support, and doesn't expect anything in return? It just doesn't pass the smell test.
We need an independent voice on this board who will be able to look out for the community's best interests. Someone who will not owe any favors to the Mills-Peninsula organization that they will be negotiating with.
That's why I'm supporting Dr. Rick Navarro, a practicing physician from our community, for the Peninsula Health Care District Board. I encourage others to vote for him too.
