I was pleased to see that the Sequoia High School District is continuing to address the issue of head injuries among high school athletes (“Spreading the word about the effect of concussions” published in the Sept. 23 edition of the Daily Journal).
As a member of the 2014-2015 San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury, we issued a report reviewing the efforts that were being made by San Mateo County high school districts in preventing head injuries among athletes and making various recommendations to enhance various safety measures, including the use of neurocognitive testing of athletes.
When you see the ongoing studies that are being done in relation to the drastic and life ending effects of head injuries among former National Football League players, it is ever so important that we implement programs that protect young athletes from sustaining head injuries that can lead to serious health issues later in life.
It is good to see that the Sequoia High School District in partnership with Sequoia Hospital continues the important work of implementing programs that offer protections for our student athletes.
