I’ve called Daly City home for over 20 years and I choose to ride public transit all the time. I use SamTrans to get around, but my destinations are usually in San Francisco, East Bay or South Bay — so I always have to transfer to other agencies like BART, Caltrain and SFMTA for my trips.
SamTrans and other public transit agencies are facing a fiscal cliff and are at risk of service cuts — which would be devastating for riders who depend on them and imperil our economic growth. Of course I want to help SamTrans, but it’s also essential that all the other Bay Area agencies survive as well. I really want to see ALL the agencies work together on a regional funding solution that would support service in a coordinated, holistic way — not a piecemeal solution that divides voters and would result in a fragmented system and a poor rider experience.
Keep in mind, most transit riders in San Mateo County are like me — we use multiple agencies on a regular basis and we think of the Bay Area as one region. Just saving SamTrans isn’t enough — let’s all support MTC to come up with a workable regional funding solution so we don’t have to choose between competing measures. Thank you!
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Tan. However SamTrans and other public transit agencies have shown no fiscal restraint or accountability in the past and I wouldn’t expect them to in the future. These agencies continued running at full strength during COVID when ridership was 50% or less and these agencies continue running at full strength now, when ridership is 50% or less. Vote NO on any measures to fund public transportation. Most, if not all the money, will go towards paying salaries and ever increasing pensions and benefits of transit workers.
