Editor,
This letter is in response to Peter Antoniak’s letter. First of all, thank you for your service in Vietnam. Secondly, before you start bashing Trump, why don’t you and the rest of the Democrats give the man six months?
From where I’m sitting, so far, he is doing nothing but saving us money, cutting out fraud and waste and making other countries pay their fair share when it comes to tariffs. Those items alone are a refreshing change from the typical Democratic-run government. Everybody is all up in arms about Trump. The man is not a politician. He is a businessman. The Democrats are just mad because the free money train they have lived with for the last many years is over. You can’t tell me that all of those grants that the Democrats gave away didn’t have a path of shoveling money back to those politicians.
The amount of money these politicians earn isn’t near what they are worth. They are crooked as hell. At the very least, Trump is trying to clean some of these dirty dealings up. That’s the reason why the Democrats are all up in arms. Trump is messing around with their free money train. I will say it again give it six months before you start passing judgment on Trump.

Give Trump another chance, - to do what? Appoint more totally incompetent people to important positions, like Hegseth and RFKjr, arbitrarily cancel vital programs, mess with functions he doesn’t understand, enrich himself and his own family, - or simply take the country off the proverbial cliff?
Good morning, Neil
Thanks for suggesting a sensible idea... give the Trump administration six months. However, you're not likely to see too many takers on the left side of the aisle in these pages.
Here's what's baffling... the issues with the border... massive numbers of persons crossing without permission with gang members and other criminals included in those numbers... that didn't just start happening on January 20, 2025. The havoc and sorrow caused by Biden's border polices seem to have escaped notice by progressives. Three million persons were deported during Obama's presidency with as many as three-quarters of those deportations accomplished summarily, i.e. without legal proceedings. Do you remember the hue and cry by Kakistocratic Party electeds? You don't because it didn't happen.
It's different today. We see progressive activist jurists shielding gang members in an attempt to prevent those criminals from being removed from our country. Progressive electeds breaching security lines to "rescue" persons facing deportation. You know, nearly 1600 rioters were charged in connection with breaching security lines at the Capitol on Jan. 6. They were not above the law. When progressives pressed unprecedented lawfare against a former president, they did so while chanting, "No one is above the law!" Apparently, those chants do not apply to jurists and electeds today who knowingly break the law. (Let's just skip over progressive photo ops down in El Salvador.)
So, giving the Trump administration six months to make some real progress on this issue does not seem unreasonable, but it may not be enough time to correct the mess left by Biden.
And what about the booming economy that Biden left for Trump, - as Obama did last time uneducated, bungling Trump took over? All Trump had to do, was to remain on the golf course and do nothing else, and we would have been fine! Instead, Trump wasted no time taking Biden’s good work off the cliff! Can’t accept anything done by the Democrats, - not even the social programs from the 1930’s! I have an LTE pending, “Uncooperative Republicans”, which I hope Jon is brave enough to publish soon.
Ray, here's what's baffling. The right has overblown the issues of the border to be catastrophic. It is a problem, but the vast majority of immigrants are law abiding, essential people for our country. It is the premise on which our country was founded. Now if Trump wants to deport gang members and criminals, fair enough. But, even they are entitled to due process, just as the 1600 rioters of 1/6 were given. Even the criminal Trump was given due process of committing fraud on our government and found guilty by a jury of his fellow citizens. Other than the border, which has been a mess through multiple presidents, what Biden mess has Trump improved upon? Most of the voters can tell you the messes Trump has created in his short time by his corruption, cruelty, stupidity, and chaos.
C'mon, Rel. You're a smart guy. I know. We've met and exchanged ideas in person. However, are you seriously suggesting the border did not turn into a catastrophe during the previous administration? Seventy-seven million people thought so and they voted to oust the political party responsible for that catastrophe. We are a country of immigrants, but the country was not founded on unchecked migration. Years ago, in these pages, I advocated for a commonsense approach to accepting immigrants. You're correct... we need them. However, just showing up at the border with a one-way bus ticket from some foreign destination to a city or town in the US cannot be the criteria.
Hmmm... let's look at what other countries do with persons wanting to become citizens. A certain Scandinavian country (often mentioned in the comments section) requires that someone applying for citizenship must live in that country for 8 out of the last 11 years and have valid residency permits for those 8 years. The applicant must demonstrate fluency in the country's native language and be able to show they have sufficient income to live in the country. These requirements change from time to time, and they may not be strictly applicable to all persons seeking citizenship. But the point is... you cannot just let everyone in. A Gallup poll... eight years ago... reported that nearly 160 million persons would migrate to the US if they could. Well, during Joe's term in office... millions did.
Do you think 6 months is enough time to address this problem in a meaningful way?
No, I don't believe the border was as catastrophic as the right made it to be. If so, the right had equal chances to correct the border problem when they were in power in years past. Both parties have kicked this problem down the road multiple times. It has not been politicly expedient for both to correct it. 77 million people voted for Trump because of pocketbook issues as the right picked on inflation as the root cause of people's dissatisfaction. I don't think solving the immigration problem by ignoring due process is an American solution. I don't think, given Trump's record, that 6 days, or 6 months, or 6 years will change this narcissistic sociopathic con man.
Neil, your premise is all wrong. Voters don't need 6 months while Trump destroys our country. We had Trump 1.0 for 4 years whereby he demonstrated incompetence to the extent of being the worst president of all time. We gave Trump 2.0 the honeymoon period to determine if he had changed from his first experience. He has not. He is worse. Despite your assertions, Trump has not saved us money, he has increased costs on nearly every level. DOGE has not succeeded is cutting waste, fraud and abuse, but illegally cost people their jobs and has actually cost the taxpayers more. Finally, countries are not paying their fair share on tariffs, our consumers are paying the tariffs and they are not fair! Trump has taken a fairly stable economy and, by his actions alone, reversed the stock market, the job market and prices. Trump is a pox on our country and needs to be removed now before he wrecks more havoc that cannot be reversed.
Hey, Rel
I'm assuming you and I are not experts re: how long a honeymoon lasts. I did some looking around and found that the honeymoon phase can last between 6 and 30 months, but typically, the phase appears to last between 12 and 24 months. That kinda makes Neil's suggestion we give the Trump administration 6 months seem like a reasonable idea.
Your assertion of a marital honeymoon period can vary is true in an actual marriage. However, traditionally, the honeymoon period for the presidency has been defined as the first 100 days.
Hi, Rel
Correct. The length of time a honeymoon phase following a marriage can vary. While the "first 100 days" has become a benchmark for development of policies by an incoming president, it has not become the traditional definition for the presidential honeymoon phase since FDR.
An incoming president brings a mandate to the Oval Office and typically enjoys Congressional support for that mandate. It doesn't look like that happened... maybe Trump did not get a honeymoon. If that's the case, Neil's suggestion of giving DJT 6 months seems sensible.
Back to presidential honeymoons... Gallup done quite a bit of polling on this subject. Well after FDR's "first 100 days," those surveys found presidential honeymoons decreased from about a 2-year period down to 7 months.
The progressive left... jurists and electeds... certainly didn't observe your "first 100 days" definition. Throughout our conversation on this topic, I have suggested Neil's 6-month idea seems reasonable, and at the same time, asked if you thought 6 months would be enough time to address the border disaster created by Biden.
Well?
Hey, Rel... Happy Mother's Day! We're getting ready to step out.
Will 6 months be enough time for Trump to make meaningful progress on the border crisis created by Biden and ignored by Harris? If not, how long should that "honeymoon" last?
In the news this weekend... trade talks with China making progress, Trump wants to increase trade with India and Pakistan, Zelenskyy agrees to meet with Putin at Trump's urging, and Trump taking a firm stance against Iran's nuclear program. I think we can agree there is a whole lot more than just the border going on. Doesn't all this make Neil's suggestion to give Trump 6 months sound reasonable?
He's at the very least a convicted felon. Give him a chance after he serves time. Then he can get into a halfway house for rehabilitation and begin to make amends. That should be a sufficient amount of time to restore our democracy and self-respect as a nation.
HFAB: You are quite an optimist! Do you really think Trump will ever be able to learn something? Anything? Learning ability doesn’t really grow with age, while he didn’t seem to learn anything in the expensive schools his dad wasted money on, just to get him through with some kind of fake paper to show. USC appears to be a more honorable university, since their film school rejected him, despite all the money his dad offered, just to get him in!
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Wild. Unfortunately, rabid Dems have not wanted to give Trump a chance for close to a decade so I doubt anything will change their Trump Derangement Syndrome-addled minds. If anything, I say that not only do we give Trump the rest of his term as a honeymoon but perhaps four more years with Trump 2028. The bigger question is why Dems are now supporting and fighting for invaders from the south rather than American citizens, even though, as Mr. Fowler pointed out, there was no criticism when deporter-in-chief Obama removed three million invaders. Actually, we know the answer, “orange man bad.”
Fortunately the ones who hate Trump more than they love America have no credibility, as evidenced by their comments here. For instance, and I’ll let you figure out which ones, two of these folks still tries to blame Trump for a so-called insurrection knowing that that narrative has been thoroughly debunked. And one of these folks doesn’t understand the Second Amendment or the Electoral College yet he thinks his assertions should be taken seriously. If these folks will lie about the little things, who knows what else they’ll lie about? I’d say just about everything Trump.
Meanwhile, the folks who don’t want to give Trump a chance don’t realize, or don’t want to realize, that Trump is the greatest President in their lifetimes. Twice. Looking forward to the continued exposure of the Biden/autopen cover-up by Democrat supporters and investigations into the Biden administration for their crimes against Trump and Americans. Also looking forward to more of the Biden tour of the mainstream media – to continually foil Dems.
