Editor,

“Getting old is not for cowards” is a favorite saying by my 106 years young aunt. I agree with Mary Christensson’s and Clayton Rich’s letters on happy retirement and a different perspective in the Daily Journal. Getting older is not fun. Being alone in old age is not fun either and being shipped off to a retirement facility is not what most elderly people want. All they want is a loving family that gives support and caring from the heart. No one wants to be shoved off and forgotten. It is certainly not easy to care for the elderly, but we are giving back the love they gave us when they cared for us as we grew up. Let us appreciate life, good days, health and a loving family.

Thanks for your letter, Ms. Thiel, advocating for family to care for the elderly. I tend to agree but I can also see the other side of the coin… Perhaps the elderly don’t want to live with family. For instance, when you become elderly, would you want to stay with a family member afflicted with Trump Derangement Syndrome? Have you read the multitude of letters at the Daily Journal from folks with TDS? I’d imagine these folks would deprive the elderly from oranges and orange juice, reading/watching Garfield or South Park or anything else reminding them of the color orange. As family, shouldn’t we allow the elderly to choose where they want to live? For those families that don’t allow choice, let’s help the elderly drop them from their will and beneficiary list (no, I’m not a lawyer but I play one… wait, I don’t). Or, if they don’t have money, let’s help them file criminal and civil elder abuse lawsuits. After all, the era of lawfare has been going on strong for the last 10 years… Kidding, kind of.
