San Carlos has a logo with a tree in the center that looks pretty much like an oak tree to me. This makes sense to most of us a we have a great many heritage oak trees in San Carlos we are quite fond of. All trees have their pros and cons as oak trees certainly do.
But most of you reading this realize we have a serious problem out West with trees dying due to drought, forest fires, bark beetles and more. So when we hear dragonfly the developer is thinking of eliminating 230 protected trees, it gets our attention (“Density, traffic top concerns for Black Mountain plan” in the March 6 edition).
I am in the lumber business so I appreciate the many wonderful attributes trees provide. I don’t pretend to know anything about the proposed dragonfly development on the Black Mountain property or what the landscape looks like other than what I have read.
Possibly there could be a great fire danger with this many trees and this is an opportunity to thin out the vegetation and make it a healthier and safer landscape. My hope would be that the developer would plant more trees and vegetation to replace some of what they remove. Thus providing shade, erosion control and all the healthy aspects trees and vegetation can provide if well planned.

My wish would also be that construction materials used in all parts of the project are WUI compliant or those that will not easily ignite in a forest fire.
Last but not least, let’s hope there is some affordable housing in this project for lower income residents deserving a home.
I think the project looks quite cozy and the drawings are harmonious with the area. What I really like about the drawings is they are realistic as to what can be done with the site work needed. It looks like a real nice and modern community to live in. They are clearly taking great pains to honor our environment and the surrounding habitat. I think it is very cool they are integrating the trails into the community and we all, if we live there or not, can go enjoy an improved area.
